Lasswade 10

What a great day! I would like to extend a big thank you on behalf of Lasswade Athletics Club to all the folk who participated in delivering a really good day out. I am sure all would agree that the catering team excelled themselves today….the only surprise was that there was anything left at the end. Even Dave McC couldn’t take any more …just kidding mate! The registration team were looking resplendent and welcoming as usual. The guys from Midlothian Council were hard working, efficient, there before everyone arrived and still there when all had left. Thank you guys. The race wouldn’t be possible without the support of Whitehill Welfare FC and once again their help and co-operation in staging the event was both very friendly and absolutely first class. Thanks to Angus for bringing the Loos on time! His clearing up operation is perhaps the least enviable. He said as I was leaving that at least it stopped him biting his nails! Thanks again to Kenny Marshall who had the runners away on the button as usual. Well done again to the Marshals and Officials, another invaluable contribution to making the day enjoyable, safe and encouraging for the athletes. Thanks also are due to the athletes and their friends who were on the “production team” rather than competing today. Special appreciation for Brian Wilson who not only set up the course and was responsible for lots of the organisation but managed to fit in a very reasonable 10 miles in the middle of his day. Respect! Once again Grant Butchart was good enough to allow us to have part of the race going over the grounds of Whitehill House Golf Course; the same is true for the owners of Roslynlee Hospital and other local landowners. Thanks also to the Police Officers who helped make sure the event ran smoothly and safely once again. I even learned what a “Bronze Commander” was….education as an unexpected benefit to the day. It was also good of Owen, the local councillor to come and present the trophies. Our new part-time development officer Caroline (sorry if the spelling is out will check later) got an unexpected opportunity to find out about the sharp end of the club. She came along with purpose of observing and ended up as a marshal for the day…sounds familiar!! Especial appreciation must go to the athletes and supporters who once again turned out in their hundreds. We hope you had a really enjoyable Lasswade 10 and look forward to seeing you next year.

Oh and thanks to Mr Tunnock and team for their generosity donating the wafers once again!

Thanks also to Drew for getting all the signage in place and Wullie Gordon for setting up the course and putting it away. Wullie is the first person to volunteer his services for next year. Well done mate!

Thanks to the other road users for their patience during the race….well most of them!

Nearly forgot Heather… thanks for driving the sweeper bus and also the first aid team

Thanks also to the two runners who were so thoughtful in recycling their numbers from last year (correction it was 2009. Send us the entry fee Simon and we’ll not publish your photo!!)… although it did cause the results team a wee problem…. one must admire their green credentials :-)
You can see that I keep thinking of new people to thank so please forgive me if I have left you out. Thanks to everyone who contributed to a really good race day!!

Cambuslang Winner in Lasswade 10

Once again Ferguson Park, Rosewell was the H.Q. for the running of the 2011 Lasswade Athletic Club ten mile road race. The ‘Lasswade 10’ continues to grow in popularity with the leading runners from Cambuslang, Kilbarchan, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and in the case of the third woman (Arlene Bristow) encompassing a special trip from Shetland to compete in this race. With nearly four hundred starters assembling at the west side of the village, starter Kenny Marshall set them in motion at exactly twelve noon and they headed of to Roslin Glen in bright sunshine but with the temperature dropping as the afternoon continued. It was always a close race from the start with Kerry Liam Wilson of Ron Hill Cambuslang only getting the better of 2008 winner Paul Arcari of Kilbarchan in the closing stages. The always reliable Bryan Clark of Corstorphine was involved in a long dual with Barney Phillips of the host club before opening a small gap in the last mile, enough to ensure a clear run for third spot with the Lasswade athlete enjoying a forty second advantage over the fifth placed Craig Mattocks of Hunters Bog Trotters.

In the womens race Megan Wright ( was the winner, for Hunters, from previous winner Sue Ridlay of Edinburgh and the Shetland A.C. competitor Arlene Bristow. Top Lasswade woman was Wilma Kerr and the winning teams were Corstorphine for the men (B.Clark 3 G.Wilkie 6 D.Patton 1 and Hunters Bog Trotters for the women. (M.Wright 1 Kate Jenkins 4 Morag McCracken 7 First Jog Scotland was John Smith (170th.) and the first Midlothian man was Ben Mitchell (Lasswade AC)
