Scottish Indoor League Champions!

Congratulations to our U15 Girls’ team who ended the 2009/10 indoor season in style by claiming the Scottish Athletics Indoor League title at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on Sunday.

The girls also took the bronze medal in the 4 x 200m relay held at the same arena.

The team consisted of Erin Feeley, Megan Fleming, Ellen Kristoffersen, Fiona Matheson, Katie Purves and Rachel Robertson ,  with Megan, Katie, Ellen and Rachel competing in the relay competition.

First up was the relay heat, in which the girls produced a confident performance to win comfortably and progress to the final.

With their qualification for the relay final in the bag, the girls could concentrate on the main event – the league final.  First up was the high jump, with Ellen jumping 1.50m to take first place and set the tone for the rest of the day.  This was followed by a fantastic PB time of 8.11 secs as Katie won the 60m.

With the next three events running in quick succession, the team sent out a message to their rivals as Rachel won the long jump with 4.92m, Katie won the hurdles in 9.29 secs (a new U15 Girls’ League Record), and Erin finished second in the shot putt with a new PB of 8.65m.

This put the girls in a strong position with three events to go, and when Fiona produced a huge PB of 2mins 33.33 secs finishing 3rd in the 800m, and Megan ran 31.19 secs finishing 5th in the 200m, the team only needed to finish fourth in the last event – the 300m to claim victory.  Rachel, cheered on by the rest of the team, produced a terrific finish in a thrilling race to finish second in a time of 46.11 secs.

As Rachel was met at the finishing line by her team mates, the celebrations began on the track and in the stand.  However, the girls soon had to focus on the relay final and they were determined to win another medal to complete the day.

The girls managed to deliver again, as Megan got the team of to a great start, and then a fantastic second leg from Katie put the team in a strong position.  Ellen ran the third leg really well and completed a good changeover to Rachel in the last leg who held of a strong Shettleston runner to finish third and spark of more celebrations.

It was a great performance over the whole day by all the girls in the team.

The team would like to say a big thank you to the support from the parents, Team Managers – Linda and Margaret, and the cheerleaders Lisa, Mhairi, Stephanie and Mairead !

Well done Kenny!! I liked the ruthless grin part and could almost have been there by the image it left me with.

NEW COURSE RECORD IN LASSWADE AC’s MIDLOTHIAN 10 MILE RACE

A strong class field and ideal running conditions led to a new course record being established in the 26th running of the Lasswade AC “Midlothian 10” mile road race which was contested on Sunday. The course started at the west end of Rosewell and undulated through Roslin Glen to Roslin, Auchendinny, Firth Mains, Rosslynlea and home via Whitehill Golf Course to Ferguson Park, the home of Whitehill Welfare FC.

At exactly 12:00 noon starter Kenny Marshall set the 340 athletes on their way and with the sunny weather bringing out many interested locals there was plenty of support as the mass of athletes made their way to Gourlaw cross roads where, thanks to excellent support from Lothian and Borders Police, they were successfully swung right towards Rosslynlea and through the Glen.

Already as the leaders completed the steep climb to Roslin and headed via the landfill site to the Auchendinny road it was obvious that a fast race was on the cards with a large leading group of 15 athletes showing runners from Central AC, Cambuslang and LothianRC prominent amongst them.

Down into Auchendinny and as the large group of race marshals were settling into their duties, suddenly the leaders were on them and even the lead vehicle was being pressurised. However the long tough climb over the next mile to Auchendinny Mains thinned out the race significantly to a lead group of 8 runners and as the west breeze hit their backs this group strode out back to Rosewell, via Rosslynlea, at an even faster pace.

As they left the water station at 6 miles Ross Houston of Central made a fast break but was only just ahead of Robert Gilroy (Cambuslang) and Al Anthony (Central). This was the order as they passed the second water station at Rosedale and as the swung into Thornton Road the leader made a surge to open up a large lead on his pursuers – a lead he increased in the final mile to finish in a record time (for this course) of 51 minutes 30 seconds with Gilroy 2nd in 53min 43 secs and Anthony 3rd in 54min 07secs.

Winner of the Women’s race was the consistently highly placed Kate Jenkins of Hunters Bog Trotters in 63min 26secs from Rhona Anderson (Dunbar) 66min 10secs and Melanie Henderson (Portobello RC) in 66min 56secs.

Winners of the GEORGE HAY THISTLE and ROSE for 1st Veterans were Stuart Campbell (Arbroath) 6th overall and Kate Jenkins (Hunters Bog Trotters) 35th overall while 1st Midlothian Woman, winning the Midlothian Council Trophy was Mandy Whittaker (172nd) and the 1st Midlothian Man, winning the GARY CLARKE TROPHY was Ross Milne (4th). The winning Men’s team was Moorfoot Runners while the Women’s team race was a victory for Portobello Running Club.

Prizes and trophies were presented by LASSWADE AC chairman Brian Wilson, himself a participant in the race, and a large crowd of runners and helpers were present at Ferguson Park to admire medals and congratulate prize winners and each athlete on finishing a tough race.     Full results are available in the Lasswade 10 Results section

Help!

Dave Hand tells me that we are a bit short of volunteers for this weeks Lasswade 10. It would be great to hear from anyone who could spare a few hours on Sunday to help out at this important club event.

If you can't help out on the day then maybe you could consider doing some home baking!

Please call Dave on 0131 663 0434 to "sign up"
