VMH Solicitors Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race Report

Results

The 40th running of the Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race took place on Sunday, thanks to the support of VMH Solicitors who kindly sponsored the event this year.
The last running of the event was back in 2020 and certainly one to remember due to the torrential downpours in the preceding 24 hours that almost turned the race into an aquathlon!  Fortunately, the weather was kinder to us this year and although overnight rain left the course a little muddy in places, the weather during the race was much conducive for a challenging 10 mile “undulating” road race.
A small change was made to the course this year to avoid some of the “puddles” that affected the 2020 run, taking the runners along the smooth tarmac past Whitehill House.

The race got underway at 12pm and the 137 runners on the start line made their way out of Rosewell and into 10 miles of the Midlothian countryside.

First home was James Dunn (Corstorphine AC) in 53:57, followed by Edinburgh AC’s Callum Reid in 55:30. Lasswade’s Ross Matheson, who’s in training for the London Marathon in April, was just a further minute behind in 56:30.

First lady to cross the finish line was our own Lauren Dickson in an amazing time of 58:47 which was also good enough for 5th overall.  Second was Carol Moss of Moorfoot in 72:42 with Adele Boucher hot on her heels just 7 seconds behind.

More outstanding performances worthy of note:- 17 year old Alfie McDonald clocked 61:27 for first male under 20 and 9th overall.

Possibly the first time at the Lasswade 10, a couple of “jogglers” – running whilst juggling at the same time were in the race.  James McDiarmid covered the course in 69:21 and Scott Jenkins in 72:01 and incredibly, Scott managed the entire course without a single drop!

Team honours went to the Edinburgh Men’s team of Callum Reid, Mark Thornton Smith and Sean Eng.   Penicuik team of Rachel Drummond, Julie Hand and Helen Osman took the women’s medals.

Congratulations to all runners – it’s certainly one of the toughest 10 milers in the area. Good luck to everyone who used this as part of their marathon training. I’m sure your marathon courses will be less “undulating” than this!

It goes without saying that a race like this simply cannot happen without the volunteers, officials and marshals, many who have supported the event for many years so a massive ‘Thank You’ to all of you. Thanks also to our junior club members who assisted with bags, medals and water stations.

Lasswade AC would also like to thank the following organisations for their support:

  • VMW Solicitors – our title sponsors. Please mention the Lasswade Road Race if you contact them!
  • Rotary Club of Esk Valley who provided additional marshals on the course.
  • Whitehill Welfare Football Club for use of their premises.
  • Oakridge Group for their help with the course at Rosslynlee.
  • Whitehill Golf Course
  • Midlothian Council
  • Police Scotland
  • Up and Running

Save the date for the 41st Lasswade 10 Mile Road race on Sunday, 2nd March, 2025.

If you’re looking for other local races, look no further than the Penicuik 10K organised by our friends from Penicuik Harriers on Saturday, 11th May and The Bluebell Trail Run, Dalkeith on Sunday 12th May and has 1k, 5k and 10k races.  Entry is free for pupils at Midlothian and East Lothian High Schools. The Bluebell Trail run raises funds for the Midlothian Young Person’s Advice Service (MYPAS) to support the work it does in Midlothian and East Lothian.

CSSAL Match 1 Report

Sunday 30th April, Kilmarnock

After a few seasons out of the CSSAL League, Lasswade re-joined in Division 3.  With age groups from Under 11 through to Masters (over 35s) covered, it is often described as a “family day out” with parents and children often competing on the day.

The competition seemed to get off to a great start with Lasswade athletes seemingly coming home first in almost every event they were in and if they weren’t first they weren’t far behind.  However, we did have lots of gaps in our team sheet which is partially down to exams and the distance to travel for this competition.  It would be great to see more athletes turn out to compete – we had no competitors at all in a number of age groups, which is a bit disappointing especially as there are a good number of Under 11 and Under 13 boys training with us.

The finalised results are still in the process of being scrutinized, the provisional results see Lasswade finish comfortably in 2nd place. A great start to the season.

Provisional Team Scores

  1. Corstorphine – 878
  2. Lasswade – 572
  3. Inverclyde – 442
  4. Clydesdale Harriers – 394
  5. Garscube Harriers – 338
  6. Motherwell – 336
  7. Kirkintilloch Olympians – 48

Thanks to: Officials (John, Susan and Ruth), Volunteers (Neil, Britt and Leigh) for helping out on the day and to Kenny for helping with the relay teams. Competitions simply don’t run without you.

Scottish National Relay Championships

Grangemouth, Saturday 10th September

Great to see some Lasswade teams at the Relay Championships today. The U15 and U17 girls ran well in the 4x100m and had solid baton but unfortunately did not progress beyond the heats.

The U17 Men qualified for the final of the 4x100m as 5th fastest and improved to 4th against strong competition. The eventual winners from Shettleston would have finished 3rd in the Senior Men’s final. Aaron and Kieran made their debut for the club, with Kieran stepping up from the U15s age group to allow the U17s to field a team.

The Senior Men’s team also faced tough competition in the 4x400m relay which included the exact same Kilbarchan team that won the title last year. The team chased hard and left everything on the track to finish 5th. It’s fair to say that there wasn’t much appetitive to pose for photos after their race so this is the closest we got to a team photo!

Well done to all who turned out for Lasswade today and hopefully we can get some more teams out next year.

Lasswade AC Club Competition

Report from Susan

The first day of Autumn turned out to be a lovely one and perfect for our Club Competition, the first for quite a few years. One of the aims of the Competition was to encourage our young athletes to compete again after we lost some momentum due to Covid as well as the loss of a number of Coaches. We were delighted with the turn out of around 70 x U17 athletes and most of them entered the maximum 3 events, some trying events for the first time. They all put 100% effort into everything which was wonderful to see and resulted in some fantastic performances which also bodes well for the future. We hope some have found a new “favourite“ event or at least another event they’re not afraid to try again. Congratulations to them all.

There were some very exciting close finishes on the track, none more so than the 110m Invitation Handicap which went right to the wire and all of which provided fantastic viewing for the spectators. Likewise in the Field Events, in particular the Long Jump where there were quite a few tussles for top spot.

Fifteen Relay Teams made up  of all age groups,  all running to clock the fastest times was an amazing way to finish the Competition. The medal presentation, with a beautiful sunset as a backdrop, was a moving experience for the Coaches as it was wonderful to see the Athletes all together, celebrating their own success and of those around them. We were delighted to welcome David Hand, the Club founder, who continues to support the Club at every opportunity, and was happy to present the medals and trophies. It was great to see so many spectators cheering on the Athletes and helping to create a warm, friendly and encouraging atmosphere.

We could not run an event like this without the voluntary support of the Officials  and those who helped them, so a huge thank you to them. We must also acknowledge the hard work of the Coaches who again give up so much of their time to prepare the youngsters for the events like this. Thanks to Leigh for setting up her little cafe providing much needed hot drinks as the evening air cooled. A special thanks to Andy, Keith and Susan for the huge amount of work they put in beforehand and on the evening .

There is no time to rest as we now look ahead to the Scottish Relay Championships on Saturday 10th at Grangemouth where we have entered a number of teams running distances from 100m to 800m . The Indoor Track and Field season starts soon and will take place over a number of weekends throughout the autumn and winter at The Emirates in Glasgow.

Our own Cross Country Competition will take place on Sunday 30th October at Gorebridge and there will be numerous events over the autumn and winter too. Please keep checking the website for further information on the above.

So a final thank you to everyone, including athletes who helped make our Competition such a success. See you next year!

Sarah finishes 5th at u23 European Championships

Sarah Tait continued her fine form over 3000m steeplechase this season when representing Great Britain in the u23 European Championships in Estonia last week.

Sarah would have been forgiven for being nervous representing GB for the first time but there was no sign of nerves on the start line in her heat last Thursday. Sarah put in a fine performance only a few seconds outside her PB running 10.06.71 to finish 5th and make sure of automatic qualification for the final taking place on the Saturday afternoon. A day to relax and recover.

Sarah – 5th in Europe !!

The Saturday was a hot day with temperatures reaching 34 degrees, not ideal for a fair skinned Scot! However, once again Sarah set to the task and settled down in the field of 15 runners. The race set off at a slow pace which was no doubt a good thing in the heat but it soon picked up with the french athletes who were the pre race favourites together with a polish athlete pushing it on over the last 1000m. Sarah wasn’t too far behind sitting inside the top 7 or 8 runners and moving up nicely. Sarah had a strong final lap to move up to 5th in a time of 10.04.53 and finish first british athlete. A fantastic experience of championship running at the highest level and a fine debut in a GB vest.

Congratulations Sarah all the hard work and dedication has been worth it.

Sarah Tait Selected for U23 European Championships

Lasswade AC athlete Sarah Tait has had a busy month of competitions and has shown great form over all the events that she has competed culminating in a 3rd place in her favoured event the 3000m steeplchase at the UK senior championships last weekend in Manchester.

Having run 10.00.49 for the 3000m steeplechase which was marginally outside the European u23 qualifying time of 10.00 when winning the English u23 championships in Bedford, Sarah had a nervous few days waiting to see if the selectors would give her the nod.

Thankfully it was fantastic news today when the team was announced and Sarah earned her first GB vest so is off to Tallin in Estonia next week for the u23 European Championships. Please click here for announcement on UK athletics website.

Congratulations Sarah, all of your hard work and dedication has been worth it and your selection is very well deserved.

Good luck next week from all at Lasswade AC !

Sarah secures win at Loughborough

Congratulations to Lasswade AC athlete Sarah Tait who won the 3000m steeplechase at the Loughborough international today (23/05/2021).

Due to the pandemic this was Sarah’s first race over the barriers since August 2019 but she put in a fine performance tracking Welsh athlete Lauren Cooper before making a decisive move to take the lead at the bell going into the final lap. Sarah looked strong and moved clear of Lauren to take a comfortable win and set a new PB of 10.28.17 which is a great start to the season.
