VMH Solicitors Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race Report

Sunday 1st March 2026

Slight drizzle and slightly breezy conditions didn’t dampen the moods of the 181 finishers of the VMH Solicitor’s Lasswade 10 Mile Road Race on Sunday.

First back for the post-race buffet was Rory Anderson of Teviotdale Harriers in a time of 56:17, closely followed by teammate Greg Walker (56:47).  Completing the men’s podium was James Hinton, Hunter’s Bog Trotters in a time of 57:22.

For the ladies, Lasswade’s own Amy Frankland returned to repeat her victory from last year.  Her time of 63:01 was slightly down from last year, but given the slightly less favourable weather this year, Amy was pleased to complete the race without any repeat of the foot injury which forced her out of the recent National Cross Country championships.  Also returning from last year’s podium was Janet Dickson, Fife AC who was second in a time of 65:33.  Taking bronze was unattached runner Danielle Wallace-Seaton in a time of 67:13.

Arthur Calnan of Cambulang Harriers (59:39) and former ladies winner Catriona Probert (70:07) were the recipients of the Over 40 prizes.

Wee County Harriers runner, Nathan Smith took the U20 Men’s prize with a time of 67:00.

The men’s team prize came down to the wire, with the first two teams finishing on 36 points, resulting in the prize being awarded based on a decider – the position of the 3rd team counter, which meant Portobello took the honours.  Their 3 counters were Slawomir Pietrzak (9th), Oliver Girdham (13th) and Oliver Girdham (14th).  Portobello’s women’s team of Elizabeth Polgreen (46th), Alisa Winters (66th) and Shona Macdonald (96th) completed the double for Portobello.  A big thank you to Portobello Running Club for again rallying their members to compete in our road race.

Lasswade’s other athletes competing were Gareth Fleming (27th – 66:21) and Scott Dickson (56th – 71:43). Special mention and thanks to Scott who was out on the course at 8am setting up the course for us again along with club member Steve Brown.

It goes without saying that this event does not happen without the 50+ volunteers and marshals, so a big thank you to all of you who gave up their time.  Thanks also to Police Scotland, Midlothian Council, Oakridge Group, Moredun Institute, Whitehill House Golf Course, Whitehill Welfare Football Club, Hew Hunter, Rosewell Scouts, Up and Running, Tunnocks, Stewart Brewing, Fort Douglas and last but not least, VMH Solicitors for their sponsorship.

We hope to see you all back again next year.  The date for your calendars is the 7th March 2027.

Archie was our sole competitor in the combined events, taking part in the U16 Boys Pentathlon. His 7th place overall included PBs in the 60m hurdles (9.82s), high jump (1.55m), shot putt (6.95m) and 800m (2:11.87s). His long jump of 5.46m helped him accumulate a total of 2350 points – a fantastic result against very strong opposition.

Lasswade had two teams taking part in the relays. Our Under 18 Ladies team consisted of Aoife, Morven, Emma and Beth – a strong quartet who recently qualified for SAIL Indoor League finals later this month. A 3rd place finish in their heat saw them qualify for the final in one of the non-automatic qualify places.

Despite finishing in 6th place, the girls were very strong contenders for a medal with just over a second separating the 3rd place team and Lasswade.

Lasswade’s Senior Men’s team also turned out for the relays with Jake stepping up from the under 20s and Gregor stepping “down” from the masters age group. Teamed up with Ramsay and Charlie the team finished a respectable 10th overall in the heats but did not qualify for the final.

Thanks to Ed and Coreen for the videos.

Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics Championships

4th/5th February, 2026

Lasswade’s athletes, this time competing in school colours returned home from the Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics championships with 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and a bronze.

Gold in the Under 16 Girls 1500m came courtesy of Imogen Turner.  Imogen ran the fastest time in the heats (4:52.86) to qualify as the favourite for the final the next day. She did not disappoint in the final, winning in a time of 4:44.97.  A fantastic result, completing back to back wins having won the 1500m in 2025 as well.

Morven took silver in the Under 18 Girls pole vault improving her PB to 2.50m in the process – an improvement of 35cm over the winter.

Archie returned to form in the Under 16 Boys long jump – his jump of 5.81m secured the silver and was a PB by 25cm.  Archie also ran in the 300m on day 1, winning his heat in 39.61s to qualify for the final on the following day.  In the final, Archie set a blistering pace over the first lap, most likely running his fastest 200m ever and finished in bronze medal position with a new PB of 38.85s.

Aoife who has been in fantastic form in the high jump and 200m this winter was unlucky not to medal in the high jump.  Her jump of 1.55m was the same height as the bronze medalist, but the countback rules placed Aoife in 4th.  Aoife also narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the 200m despite having run the 6th fastest time in the semi finals.

In the Under 18 Girls 400m, Beth ran a personal best to qualify for the semi finals where she achieved her 2nd PB in finishing 4th with 60.45s.  Moven also qualified for the semi-finals and finished 4th in the other semi final in a time of 60.84s

In the Under 20 Boys, Jake Salter Wood reached the finals of the 200m finishing 5th with a time 23.73, slightly down on his heat time of 23.58.  Jake also ran the 400m in 54.67 for 5th place in his heat.

Lasswade’s other athletes were:-

Ruadhan – U18B 60m – 8.06s – 8th in heat, High Jump – 1.70m – 5th
Ava C – U16G 800m – 3:34.67 – 3rd in heat
Isla M – U16G 1500m – 5:06.34 – 5th in heat
Jake P – U18B 1500m – 4:21.19 – 6th in heat
Ruaridh – U18B 400m – 55.89s – 3rd in heat

Scottish Athletics Indoor League – Final Fixture Report

The final league fixture of the Scottish Athletics Indoor League took place on Sunday 25 January, with a team of 23 Lasswade athletes making the trip to the Emirates Arena and delivering an excellent set of performances across all age groups.

Under 12 Boys

With only two athletes competing, Finlay and Roddy produced a superb team effort. They dominated the 600m, winning the A and B races by clear margins, and both added PBs in the 60m and long jump. Their combined results secured 1st place for the age group in the final fixture.

Under 14 Boys

Gregor ran a thrilling 800m, overturning a deficit at halfway to take the lead on the final bend and win his heat in 2:28.41.
Antek added a big PB in the high jump with 1.25m, improving by 15cm since the summer.
Angus threw a half?metre PB in the shot put and ran 32.77 in the 200m, while Magnus completed the squad with a 10.54 run in the 60m.

Under 16 Boys

Archie was our sole U16 representative and delivered a strong set of performances. A PB of 8.15 in the 60m was the highlight, and despite difficulties with his run?up, he still managed 5.14m in the long jump for 4th place. His 25.69 in the 200m earned him 6th overall.

Under 18 Men

Newcomer William stepped in as a late replacement for the 60m and arrived just in time to run 8.07, an impressive debut. He followed this with a strong 25.73 in the 200m for 5th place — an excellent first outing indoors.

Girls

Under 12 Girls

Katie H was again our only U12 competitor. She recorded a PB of 2.91m in the long jump and ran well in both the 600m and 60m.

Under 14 Girls

A full team turned out and produced a great set of results.
Lara was in outstanding hurdles form, winning the 60mH in 9.91, her first time under 10 seconds, and added 3rd place in the high jump with 1.30m.
Neave ran 9.86 in the 60m and 33.12 in the 200m for 12th and 14th respectively.
Isla H finally broke the 3?minute barrier in the 800m with 2:55.77 and smashed her long jump PB with 3.70m for 7th.
Cara added another PB in the shot put with 5.27m for 9th place.

Under 16 Girls

Sienna opened the age group with a PB of 9.54 in the 60m.
Ada produced one of the standout runs of the day with a big PB of 27.94 in the 200m.
Isla M finished strongly in the 300m to run 47.96 and added a long jump PB of 3.60m.
Ava C placed 9th in the 800m with 2:32.65.
In the field events, Florence equalled her PB again with 1.30m in the high jump, and Grace improved her shot put PB to 5.10m.

Under 18 Women

Despite competing at the National Championships the previous day, all four athletes returned to help secure a place in the March final — and they delivered brilliantly.

Beth, recovering from illness on Saturday, bounced back to win her 400m heat and finish 2nd overall in a PB of 61.39. She also contested her first 60m, winning her heat and placing 4th overall in 8.51.
Aoife, after two tough 200m races the day before, ran another excellent 400m in 26.48 for 3rd, then equalled her high jump PB of 1.57m, coming close at 1.59m.
Multi?eventer Morven opted for a “lighter” day but still completed three events: a PB of 8.71m for 3rd in the shot put, 4.80m for 3rd in the long jump, and 10.43 in her first U18 60m hurdles race for 4th.
Emma rounded off the group with 2:38.65 for 6th in the 800m.

The quartet finished joint 2nd overall in the U18 Women’s category and secured one of the six qualifying spots for the final in March.

Scottish Senior & U18 Indoor Championships

Report by John McOmish

Another weekend at the Emirates Arena and another championships for Lasswade athletes – 8 athletes entered themselves across the events taking place.

U18W

Emma, Morven and Aoife S all entered in the HJ; Emma clearing 1.34m for 7th place, Morven clearing 1.39m for 6th place and Aoife picking up a bronze medal with a clearance of 1.54m.

Aoife also competed in the 200m, qualifying from her heat in 2nd place with 26.30, before running faster in her semi final with a time of 26.20

Morven once again demonstrated her skills across multiple events and competed in the PV and 400m alongside the HJ.  Picking up a bronze medal with a first time clearance at 2.29m before then winning her heat in the 400m with a PB of 61.28 to qualify for the final; running another PB of 60.53 for 4th place.

U18M

The U18M age group saw Ruairidh taking on the 400m, running the 2 laps indoors in a time of 56.10 for 4th in his heat.

Jake was contesting the 1500m.  Tough qualifying conditions of only the top 5 in each heat, Jake sadly missed out by a tenth of a second in his heat, finishing 6th in 4:28.62.  It’s worth noting that the speed of the race, with the top 6 finishers all separated by less than 1 second!

Senior Men

Andrew Brown was back at the Emirates once again to run many laps of the 200m track – running in the 1500m as a straight final, Andrew ran 4:12.91 to come across the line 7th.

Petter Tye, not wanting to run as many laps as Andrew, entered into the shorter distances of 60m and 200m.  In the 60m, Petter navigated his heat coming 2nd in 7.34, behind the eventual winner.  In the semi final, Petter came through in a time of 7.37 for 7th place.  For his 3rd race of the day, the 200m the tough qualifying of top 2 and next two best, Petter finished 3rd in his heat with a time of 23.75

Finally, Alec Miller was through for the HJ.  Surviving a scare at 1.84m, Alec jumped 1.94m at the first time, claiming the silver medal and 1cm below the PB set the previous competition at the Open.

Lasswade came away with 3 medals – 1 silver and 2 bronze.  A massive thanks goes out to everyone involved in helping ALL Lasswade athletes compete at competitions – family, coaches and officials.
